Biomedical and Environmental Sensor Technology (BEST)

The Biomedical and Environmental Sensor Technology (BEST) Research Centre is at the forefront of developing next-generation sensor technologies that improve lives and address global challenges.

Our mission is to take molecular and chemical analysis out of the conventional centralised laboratory and bring it directly to the point of need, whether that’s in a remote community, a clinical setting, an industrial site, or the natural environment. By doing so, we enable more accessible, timely, and cost-effective solutions across health, agriculture, environmental monitoring, and beyond.

Sensor technologies, particularly chemical sensors and biosensors, are vital tools for understanding and managing our chemical and biological surroundings. They power innovations in personalised medicine, ensure food safety, optimise industrial efficiency, and support environmental sustainability.

The BEST Centre brings together a multidisciplinary team of researchers and industry partners to co-design sensor systems that are smart, robust, and practical for real-world use. Through this collaborative approach, we are shaping a future where critical analytical data is available when and where it’s needed most.
