Opportunities for joint PhD positions at BITS Pilani and La Trobe University

The Asian Smart Cities Research and Innovation Network (ASCRIN) has a number of joint PhD scholarships on offer.

10 are available with Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani and 40 with IIT Kanpur at the IIT Kanpur-La Trobe University Research Academy

Below are three projects seeking PhD candidates at BITS Pilani.


Project 1:

Remote sensing enabled public policy analysis of air-pollutants in peri-urban environments: An Indo-Australian case study – RESPIRE


The supervisory team are looking for a person with a M.A./M.S. in Social Science (with dissertation) or M.E./MTech. with applied research in environmental issues who can demonstrate the ability to analyse both quantitative and qualitative data.

The position is for a project titled "Remote sensing enabled public policy analysis of air-pollutants in peri-urban environments: An Indo-Australian case study – RESPIRE". This project aims at understanding the nature of air pollution in peri-urban areas in the context of agriculture, the relative effectiveness of existing policy controls and opportunities for development of new evidence-based policy frameworks to support urban planning decisions in both India and Australia.

Project 2:

Intelligent planning of Prosumer Microgrid (PMG) Load Management in Smart Cities for Optimal Energy Consumption

The supervisory team are looking for a candidate with ME/ MTech in Power Systems/ Smart Grids/Energy (or equivalent) having experience in AI techniques applications.

The position is for a project titled  "Intelligent planning of Prosumer Microgrid (PMG) Load Management in Smart Cities for Optimal Energy Consumption". This project aims at reduction in energy consumption cost through intelligent monitoring of the loads and generations of the PMG with BESS.

Project 3:

Building Multi-source knowledge base for AI-driven public health explainable chatbots

The supervisory team are looking for a person with  M.E./M.Tech. in Computer Science (CS)/Data Science/Artificial Intelligence (AI) or relevant equivalent degree with 70% marks or CGPA 7.0 for BITS Pilani and must also fulfill requirements from La Trobe University in addition to possessing good knowledge and experience of working on ML/NLP projects.

The position is for a project titled "Building Multi-source knowledge base for AI-driven public health explainable chatbots".

Project 4:

Electric-assist bicycle (e-Bike) mobility planning for smart cities: Fostering active transportation to improve public health, air-quality, sustainability, and efficiency during COVID-19

The supervisory team are looking for a person with M. Tech / M.E. in Transportation Systems Engineering / Urban Planning / Infrastructure Planning.

The position is for a project titled "Electric-assist bicycle (e-Bike) mobility planning for smart cities: Fostering active transportation to improve public health, air-quality, sustainability, and efficiency during COVID-19".

Project 5

Building Actionable and Smart Information Systems for Migrant Workers in Smart Cities

Dr Julie Rudner, Dr Martina Boese and Dr Dipanjan Chakraborty are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate for a BITS Pilani and La Trobe University joint PhD programme. The successful candidate will spend one year at La Trobe University and the remaining time at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus.

This is a very exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of Information Systems, HCI, ICTD and Social Sciences and make tangible real world impact.
