Traffic & parking
Student and private accommodation in Bendigo CBD with modern facilities, parking, and improved transport and traffic planning.
We are progressing plans for new student accommodation at 57–63 Williamson Street, Bendigo. To support this development, a comprehensive Traffic Impact Assessment has been undertaken to ensure the project aligns with the needs of students, staff, and the local community. The assessment focuses on maintaining safe, efficient, and sustainable transport options while addressing any potential concerns from nearby residents.
Sustainable Transport Options
The new student accommodation will be well connected to public transport, with several bus stops expected to be located nearby and Bendigo Station within easy reach. These services will have spare capacity and are anticipated to comfortably accommodate additional demand.
Public transport access will remain a key strength of the site. Multiple bus routes will continue to serve Williamson Street and surrounding areas, and the proximity to Bendigo Station will provide convenient regional connections. The existing bus stops have sufficient capacity and do not require upgrades at this stage.

Cycling will be promoted, with direct connections to Bendigo’s bike network and new facilities that meet council safety and accessibility standards. New facilities, including secure bike storage and footpath-mounted bicycle hoops, will be installed to encourage cycling as a safe and convenient option.

Pedestrian access will also be a priority, with continuous footpaths and safe crossings ensuring walkability throughout the area. There will be upgrades to footpaths and crossings to support safe and easy movement throughout the precinct. The area will remain highly walkable, with convenient access to shops, schools, and public transport.
Traffic and Parking
The study found that most campus car parks are operating below full capacity, with only a few consistently busy during peak times. This means the existing parking infrastructure is sufficient to support the new accommodation without causing overflow or disruption. Improvements such as clearer line marking and signage are being considered to enhance parking compliance and safety.
For any students and guests who own a private vehicle, La Trobe will provide car spaces within the campus to enable student and guest parking. The campus car parking duration will directly coincide with the duration of the residential agreement term and check-in/check-out procedures for guests.
The shuttle bus will provide a link between the campus car parking and the subject site for all students and guests with a car space on campus. The travel time for this service is approximately 5 minutes and will run on a custom timetable with frequencies to facilitate students attending their classes.
Community Considerations
Community concerns around traffic congestion, parking overflow, and safety have been carefully considered. The assessment found no evidence of significant congestion or unsafe conditions, and the surplus of campus parking mitigates any risk of overflow. Safety recommendations include the installation of speed humps, improved signage, and enhanced line marking. All new infrastructure will meet accessibility standards, ensuring inclusive access for all users.
