La Trobe University’s initiative to develop a five-star green star 220-bed student accommodation facility at 57–63 Williamson Street, Bendigo. The project aims to provide high-quality, sustainable housing for students, including long-term and short-stay options. Which provides:

  • Inclusive, healthy, safe, liveable spaces enhancing student wellbeing / sense of place. With generous communal internal and external spaces.
  • Long-term student and private / short stay accommodation ranging from 1 bed to 4 bed options. A balanced but flexible mix of communal spaces in size, activities supported and level of privacy.
  • Activated ground floor with retail – e.g. café / restaurant, convenience store / specialty retail.
  • An iconic, identifiable and lasting statement building that considers the social, indigenous (Djaara) and heritage values of Bendigo.
  • Easy access to all amenities and public transport.

The facility is designed for La Trobe University’s students and is likely to attract mature and international students. The facility will also cater to short-stay users such as key workers, TAFE students, and visitors.

The project will:

  • Aligns with La Trobe’s Regional Innovation and Growth Strategy improving accessibility, strengthening Bendigo’s identity as a university city, and driving economic and social development. A city-centre location would enhance regional student enrolment, and integrate students into the community, reinforcing La Trobe’s presence. It would also foster local business growth, employment opportunities, and inclusivity, making higher education more visible and attainable. Ultimately, this project supports long-term regional growth, positioning La Trobe as a leader in education and innovation.
  • Stimulate local economic growth with direct job opportunities in operations, maintenance, and support staff, and indirect employment through increased demand for local services, retail, hospitality and administration as well as construction related job.
  • Strengthens partnerships via collaboration with local industry and community organisations; co-location of partners; and student pathways through local schools and employers.
  • Create a greater presence for La Trobe in the Bendigo City Centre and align with La Trobe’s aspirations to be a university where people, place and culture converge, and lives are transformed.
  • Enhance student living standards
  • Align with Bendigo’s City Revitalisation and Managed Growth strategies providing inclusive housing for diverse student populations; increased local spending; and access to campus facilities and events for community members.

Through various channels including:

  • Direct communications (letters, emails, signage)
  • Public drop-in sessions to be held during public exhibition
  • Website with regular updates
  • Regular engagement with the Dja Dja Wurrung to inform the design
  • Surveys and workshops with students
  • Briefings for key local businesses and key community members

Students aged 18+ enrolled at La Trobe University

There will be:

  • Secured/controlled access with electronic keycards, CCTV monitoring for surveillance
  • Shuttle buses will be provided for transport to and from the flora hill campus, with 24/7 security on campus
  • 24/7 on-site staff in the proposed new building
  • Regular welfare checks will be carried out
  • Emergency and critical incident procedures

A Green Travel Plan has been prepared for the project which will promote walking, cycling, and public transport. It includes:

  • Public transport kits for new residents
  • Annual monitoring and reporting
  • Active transport events and awareness campaigns

To support the green travel plan, the residents will be encouraged to use other modes of transport including:

  • Shuttle bus to and from the campus
  • E-bikes / e-scooters
  • Care share

The project proposes to include 8 on-site car spaces, including 1 loading bay and 2 car-share spaces. La Trobe also intends to provide car share, e-bikes/e-scooters for students.

Yes. La Trobe University will provide up to 90 car parking spaces at its Bendigo Campus, with a dedicated shuttle service connecting the campus to the accommodation site.

The project will include 67 bicycle parking spaces.

Yes. The building will include:

  • EV charging points for at least 5% of car spaces.
  • Infrastructure to support future expansion to 25% of spaces.
  • Dedicated car-share connections.

The project will comply with Green Star Building standards targeting a 5-Star green star rating.

Yes. The building will include:

  • Showers and lockers
  • Secure, well-lit bike storage
  • Repair stations
  • e-bike / e-scooter charging
