About the project

This report synthesises evidence from 226 studies examining the experiences of LGBTQIA+ people with cancer across the care continuum, spanning prevention and screening, diagnosis and treatment, survivorship, and end-of-life care.

Commissioned by Cancer Council Australia, the review responds to a national commitment to advancing equitable, inclusive, and affirming cancer care.

Drawing on both Australian and international literature - including extensive Australian studies examining LGBTQIA+ people’s experiences within local cancer and healthcare systems - the findings highlight persistent disparities, systemic barriers, and psychosocial challenges, while also identifying protective factors and opportunities for service improvement.
