About us

Val’s LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care works with aged care, health and human services providers, and a range of community stakeholders to improve the health, wellbeing and visibility of older LGBTI+ people.

Val’s LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care (formerly Val’s Café), was established in 2009 and works with services to improve inclusive ageing pathways, care and visibility of older LGBTI+ people. Val’s also supports older LGBTI+ people to access the information and support they may need as they age.

Val’s is part of Rainbow Health Australia at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society at La Trobe University.

Val’s works with service providers nationally (including both community and residential aged care, health and human services) to foster an understanding of the histories and experiences of older LGBTI+ people, and how these may impact their ageing experiences and access to services and care. Val’s aims to build capability and commitment to be LGBTI+ aware and inclusive.

Val’s is largely funded to support the transition of the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) to the Support at Home Program, and guide CHSP services to provide high-quality, rights-based, person-centred in line with sector reforms and requirements, and that are inclusive of older LGBTI+ people.
