When should I apply?
We recommend that you apply for accommodation at your preferred campus as soon as possible. Applications are made online, and are all open from our Melbourne Campus Open Day
If you wait to receive a University offer before you apply for accommodation, we may not be able to offer you a place as our availabilities may have been filled.
Can I see the accommodation before I apply?
We encourage you to attend an Open Day or Experience La Trobe event, as it is a great opportunity to view our residential colleges as well as exploring our university campus. Our Accommodation Services team will be conducting tours on these days of our residential precincts.
To request a visit at another time, please contact our Accommodation Services team.
Note that tours are not possible during University examination periods out of respect for our residents while they are studying for their exams.
Do I need to be a full-time student to apply?
No, you just have to be enrolled at a tertiary institute in at least a part time capacity.
Do I need to be a La Trobe University student?
Priority is given to La Trobe University students. If there are vacancies after first round offers, we are able to consider RMIT Bundoora students and students studying in the CBD (please keep in mind we are a 45 minute tram ride from the city).
What if I have not received a first-round university offer to study at La Trobe?
If you hope to receive a study placement in second or third round offers, we can offer anyone who studies at a tertiary institute accommodation – please contact our team to let us know you are still interested in living at La Trobe and keep us informed if you do receive a study offer for that semester in a subsequent round.
Can I apply for only one semester?
Offers for residential places are typically made on the understanding you will stay for a full academic year (from February to November).
We do make exceptions for students completing their studies after one semester, such as International Exchange students.
If you have applied to start in Semester 2, you will only be signed up for one semester, as the academic year ends in November.
Do I need to have an interview as part of my application?
No, interviews are not required.
Receiving an offer
I’m an Australian Year 12 student – when will I find out if my application has been successful?
After VTAC offers have been made, you will be notified of the outcome of your application in mid-January.
I’m an international student – when will I find out if I have a residential place?
If you applied prior to 30 November, we will be able to make you an early round offer in December. All applications submitted after 30 November will receive a response in January or later, depending on the semester for which you have applied.
Can I defer my accommodation offer?
No, we are not able to defer accommodation offers. Using your existing StarRez account, you can re-apply in August for the following year.
If you cannot locate the StarRez details you used when originally applying, please contact our team at firstname.lastname@example.org. Do not create a new StarRez account.
What if I accept an accommodation offer with La Trobe, but then decide to attend another university?
Before you accept your accommodation offer from La Trobe, please ensure you are committed to attending. Your deposit is non-refundable if you change your mind once you’ve accepted a residential place.
What if I am not accepted into my first preference of accommodation?
Our application process allows you to indicate a second and third preference for accommodation. Our team aims to place as many students in their preferred residence as possible. We recommend submitting your application as early as possible to give you the best chance of securing your preferred residence.
What if I didn’t receive an offer of accommodation?
We run a database of nearby off-campus accommodation providers. This is a free service that connects landlords and tenants, and is available to any student with a La Trobe University email address. View off-campus accommodation.
What is the rent schedule?
Rent is charged monthly – you will receive a charge on the first business day of each month, with payment due by 5pm on the fifth business day. If you would prefer to pay for a whole semester, or a year in advance, please visit the Accommodation Services office to discuss.
Can I pay by bank transfer?
Yes, we accept payment by bank transfer. Once you have been accepted to stay in La Trobe Accommodation, you will receive information with your offer, including further details on how to pay your fees.
Can I stay over the holiday period?
During the academic year, if you are contracted for the full time, you are able to stay in your residence throughout the mid-year break. You will continue to pay rent for this period, regardless of whether you remain there or not, as rent is calculated based on a 42 week contract.
If you are a current resident and would like to remain over the Christmas holiday break (after the academic year has concluded), you can complete a summer residency application form. The Accommodation Services team will communicate further information to students about this process in the lead-up to the summer break.
