Background
Expressions of Interest
Scholarship code: SRS-26038
This PhD project will focus on developing the mathematical tools necessary for modelling infectious disease dynamics at different scales. These tools will be developed in the context of addressing specific scientific questions about the transmission and control of important human pathogens such as Streptococcus pyogenes and/or the parasites causing onchocerciasis, scabies or malaria.
This project would be suitable for a student with a background in applied mathematics, applied probability or a related discipline.
The scholarship is funded via an Australian Research Council Discovery Project awarded to Prof Jennifer Flegg (University of Melbourne), Dr Mark Flegg (Monash University) and A/Prof Rebecca Chisholm (La Trobe University).
Benefits of the scholarship
- a stipend scholarship for three and a half years, with a value of $36,000 per annum
- a fee-relief scholarship for up to four years
- opportunities to work with La Trobe University's outstanding researchers and have access to our suite of professional development programs
Are you eligible to apply?
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:
- meet the entrance requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy
- have a background in applied mathematics. Experience in modelling infectious diseases or in other areas of mathematical biology is preferable
In selecting successful applications we prioritise applications from candidates who:
- will be enrolled full-time and undertaking their research at a La Trobe University campus
- have completed a Master's by Research or other significant body of research, such as an honours research thesis or lead authorship of a peer-reviewed publication, assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 75 or above
How to apply
Expressions of interest should be emailed to Associate Professor Rebecca Chisholm (r.chisholm@latrobe.edu.au), including the following documentation:
- academic transcripts
- copy of your research thesis and/ or links to publications
Short list applicants will be required to attend an online interview, and only the top-ranked applicant will be invited to submit a full application for entry into the Doctor of Philosophy.
