Background

This prestigious scholarship, established by La Trobe University in partnership with the Essendon Football Club, will be awarded to an outstanding applicant who is interested in exploring player development in Australian football using sport data science, while contributing to a high-performance team in an elite sport environment.

The objective of this project is to improve methods for assessing player development with a focus on the transition of players from tier two to tier one in Australian football using physical, technical, and tactical data.

As an applicant you should have formal training in data science or statistics including proficiency with the R or Python programming language as well as an interest in sport analytics and/or performance analysis and familiarity with Hudl SportsCode. A high level of academic achievement is expected, including excellent research, analytical, project management, oral and written communication skills. A demonstrated ability to disseminate research findings (e.g., peer-reviewed publications) is preferred.

Benefits of the scholarship include:

  • a Research Training Program (RTP) or La Trobe University Graduate Research Scholarship (LTGRS) for three and a half years, with a value of $33,500 per annum (2023 rate), to support your living costs
  • an additional industry partner stipend contribution of $16,000 per annum for three and a half years
  • access to a La Trobe Graduate Research Industry Engagement Allowance of $2,000
  • a fee-relief scholarship for up to four years

  • meet the entrance requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • not be receiving another scholarship greater than 75 per cent of the stipend rate for the same purpose
  • be an Australian and New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident

In selecting successful applicants, we prioritise applications from candidates who:

  • will be enrolled full-time and undertaking their research at a La Trobe University campus
  • have completed a Masters by Research or other significant body of research, such as an honours research thesis or lead authorship of a peer-reviewed publication, assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 75 or above

If you are shortlisted for the scholarship and candidature, you will be invited to an interview with representatives of La Trobe and Essendon Football Club.

The final decision will be made based on your application and interview. The successful candidate will be made an offer for candidature and scholarship.
