Background

La Trobe University recognises the valuable contribution that people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds make to the Australian community.

The La Trobe Humanitarian Scholarship (International) supports eligible students undertaking on campus undergraduate study.

Recipients receive:

• A scholarship to the value of AUD $5000 per year to support living expenses; and
• A 100% tuition fee waiver, for the normal full-time duration of their degree. 

Are you eligible to apply?

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

• Be residing in Australia

• Submit an application using the online application form which will be made available 12 October 2026 - 6 December 2026

• Be deemed as a person seeking asylum or a refugee holding one of the following:

1. Temporary Protection Visa (TPV) (V785)

2. Temporary Humanitarian Stay visa (Subclass 449)

3. Temporary Humanitarian Concern visa (Subclass 786)

4. Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (SHEV) (V790)

5. Anyone on a bridging visa and who has applied for a Permanent Protection visa (subclass 866).

6. Bridging Visa E (BVE) (subclass 050)

• Be enrolled or have applied to study in Semester 1 2027 as a full-time student in an undergraduate degree delivered on campus at La Trobe University*

* Please note students enrolled in Open Universities Australia, third-party providers and online courses are not eligible.

Recipient obligations

1. This scholarship is available for both full-time and part-time study where the part-time study is approved by La Trobe University. You may have visa conditions which don’t allow you to study part-time. Refer to the Department of Home Affairs website or your visa grant notice for more information. There may be tax implications for scholarship recipients studying part-time. 2. If you currently receive Status Resolution Support Service (SRSS) SRSS, Special Benefit, or other government financial support, please note that this support may change after you commence full-time university study. 

3. You must inform the Scholarships Office immediately if your visa changes.

4. If Government policy or your residency changes, and you become eligible for Government programs that assist students with deferring fees (e.g. FEE-HELP, HECS-HELP, SA-HELP), the scholarship will no longer cover the course fee portion of your scholarship, but you may continue to receive the living allowance if you already receive it.

How to apply

An online application form will be made available on 12 October 2026. Scholarship applications will not be assessed until a course offer is confirmed. Please complete the online application 

You will be asked to provide:

• A copy of your current visa (if you are currently on a Bridging Visa A or E and have applied for a Protection visa, please provide a copy of the acknowledgement letter from Immigration)

• Evidence of your financial situation, such as a centrelink statement, or any other type of evidence to support your financial claims. 

You may also wish to include references from employers, community organisations, academics or any other relevant group that wish to support your scholarship application.
