Background

This doctoral research scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding candidate to undertake research on an Australian Research Council – Discovery Project. The research aims at investigating trends in alcohol, tobacco and gambling expenditure and their associations with socioeconomic inequalities.

These prestigious scholarships, established by the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research, La Trobe University in partnership with the Australian Research Council, will be awarded to outstanding applicants who are interested in exploring how to use social and health policy to reduce heavy drinking, smoking, and gambling activities, and indeed to reduce harms related to three risk behaviours and social inequalities.

As an applicant you should have an interest in addictive behaviours, harm reduction, health promotion, social and health policy and interventions and research. Experience of quantitative research, health policy, and economical and statistical analyses in a relevant field will be highly regarded.

Are you eligible to apply?

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:

To be eligible, you will need one of the following:

  • a Masters by research degree in a relevant discipline completed within the last ten years assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 75 or above;

    OR
  • an Honours degree, Masters by coursework or ungraded Masters by research degree completed within the last ten years where you achieved a weighted average mark of 70 or above across any coursework subjects;
    AND any of the following assessed at a La Trobe Masters by research standard of 75 or above:

    - a research thesis of approximately 15,000-20,000 words; or
    - the degree includes a written research component comprising at least 3/8 of one year; or
    - you are the lead author of a peer-reviewed publication or other research published within the last ten years
