Background

Understanding heavy alcohol consumption cultures among nurses and lawyers

We are seeking expressions of interest from suitably qualified candidates for a PhD scholarship related to a new ethnographic research project funded by the Australian Research Council and the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth).

Candidates are expected to start their research on or before the 1st of January 2021.

This PhD scholarship will support an ethnographic project investigating drinking cultures among nurses and lawyers. The Project aims to generate new knowledge on sociocultural practices of drinking in the groups and illuminate relations between drinking cultures and harms. A strong background in anthropology, sociology, posthuman theory or science and technology studies is preferred.
This scholarship will support the overall aims of the project. The successful applicant will collaborate with the chief investigators to identify an ethnographic thesis project, conducted with one of the two occupational groups, which is able to contribute directly to the aims of the larger project while also reflecting the interests and aspirations of the student.

The successful applicant will:
  • have a high level of academic achievement (see the La Trobe academic eligibility criteria below) and have experience in anthropology, sociology, gender studies, or a related discipline (e.g., youth studies)
  • be able to undertake field research (participant observation, interviews, observation) involving work in the evening and on weekends
  • be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.
Experience of qualitative research in a relevant field will be highly regarded.

Benefits of the scholarship include:

  • a La Trobe Research Scholarship for three and a half years, with a value of $28,092.00 per annum, to support your living costs (2020 rate)
  • a fee-relief scholarship for up to four years to undertake a PhD at La Trobe University
  • opportunities to work with La Trobe’s outstanding researchers, and have access to our suite of professional development programs.

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, applicants must:
