Research Awards
The Research Masters Award
Established in 2025, the Research Masters Award is conferred by the Board of Graduate Research. The award recognises candidates who have authored outstanding Master’s by Research theses, acknowledging the originality, quality and impact of their research within their field.
The Research Masters Award is typically conferred where thesis examiners have awarded a grade of 90 or above. The School Director of Graduate Research (SDGR) may also recommend a candidate to the Board of Graduate Research where a thesis has not been graded, or where one or more examiners have awarded a grade of 85 or above. In making such recommendations, the SDGR considers the examiners’ reports, disciplinary grading norms, and the significance and impact of the research within the relevant field.

The Nancy Millis Award for Doctoral These of Exceptional Merit
Name after Professor Nancy Millis, who served as Chancellor of La Trobe University for 14 years from 1992 - 2006. Professor Millis is a designated Australian "Legend" for her work in the scientific community, and is one of only five Australian scientists recognised on the 'Australian Legends' series of stamps in 2002. During her distinguished career, Professor Millis gained a string of scientific and civic accolades, including election to the Australian Academy of Science, an MBE and a Companion of the Order of Australia.
The Nancy Millis Medal is awarded to the authors of outstanding doctoral theses. Prior to 2025, this only included PhD theses. Examiners are asked if they consider the thesis to be in the top five per cent of theses they have examined that demonstrate the significance or impact of the work in their field of research. Nominated theses are then recommended following the examination process and are considered for award through a selection process that involves the School's Director of Graduate Research endorsement and approval by the Board of Graduate Research.
