Building the next generation of AI innovators

La Trobe University’s AI Innovation Ventures Program is preparing the next generation of AI innovators by combining students, industry experts and entrepreneurs to develop practical AI solutions.

La Trobe University is shaping the future of AI innovation by bringing together talent, technology and industry to create solutions for tomorrow’s challenges.

Artificial intelligence is changing the way organisations operate, innovate and solve complex challenges. The future of AI will be shaped by technology and by people who can identify opportunities, think creatively and collaborate to turn ideas into meaningful solutions.

This is the focus of La Trobe University’s AI Innovation Ventures Program, which brings together students, industry experts and entrepreneurs to explore the intersection of AI, innovation and entrepreneurship. Through hands-on learning, industry engagement and venture development, students are supported to move from identifying problems to developing and testing AI-driven solutions.

The program commenced with an immersive Bootcamp, marking the beginning of a broader innovation journey where participants continue refining ideas, validating opportunities, developing prototypes and building the skills needed to transform concepts into AI-driven solutions.

The impact for industry

During the Bootcamp, participants were able to talk about their projects with industry partners Microsoft, Oracle, Cisco and ServiceNow, sector-leading insights into how organisations are approaching and applying AI, the opportunities it creates, and the capabilities needed for the future workforce.

Collaboration is at the heart of the program, creating value for both students and industry partners.

Ken Rankins, Client Executive for Higher Education, from Microsoft, said the program is “valuable for students as it gives them the opportunity to see how to apply AI with industry, and really important for us because we get insights from students.”

The program also gives organisations the opportunity to engage with emerging talent early in their innovation journey.

Peter Rowe, Senior Advisory Solution Consultant at, ServiceNow explains that “It gives the organisation a great opportunity to interface with some of the up-and-coming talent.”

Beyond engaging with emerging talent, the program provides industry partners with an opportunity to showcase their brand to future professionals in fields such as AI, IT and cybersecurity, while gaining fresh perspectives and diverse ways of thinking from the next generation of innovators.

From ideas to possibilities

Innovation requires more than technical knowledge. It requires curiosity, experimentation and the ability to explore opportunities from different perspectives.

Program mentor, Bianca La Serra, Founder of Research Technology startup, Telmy, explains “It’s been great to watch the student's progression. They’ve been open-minded and asking all the hard questions to explore the potential solutions out there.”

The program’s collaborative approach also extends beyond industry partners, with mentors supporting students as they navigate the early stages of developing their ideas.

“I honestly think this is the future of universities and programs. Students get an amazing opportunity to work on real problem-solving with mentors and support.”

Empowering the next generation of AI innovators

For participating students, the program provides an opportunity to explore AI in a practical, collaborative environment while developing skills that extend beyond technical knowledge.

“This program is a great opportunity to learn from the industry partners and solve a real-world problem with their mentorship and guidance.”
Ashley, Master of Cybersecurity student

Following the Bootcamp, students work in small interdisciplinary teams through a structured innovation journey that includes market validation, customer discovery, prototype development and venture refinement. Supported by weekly mentoring, industry workshops and regular progress check-ins, participants will present their solutions to industry and venture leaders, competing for up to $3,000 in prize funding while earning academic credit towards their degree.

Building the future through collaboration

The rapid evolution of AI presents both opportunities and challenges for organisations across every industry. Building the capabilities needed to navigate this future requires collaboration between universities, industry and the next generation of innovators.

Through programs like AI Innovation Ventures, La Trobe creates opportunities for industry partners to connect with emerging talent, explore new ideas and collaborate on solutions shaped by real-world challenges.
