La Trobe students get their start in sport with the Melbourne Rebels

La Trobe University’s long-term ties with our leading sport industry partners continues to deliver positive employability outcomes for students.

Take the examples of La Trobe alumnus Richard Dell and current La Trobe international student Robert Neumann, who are just two students who have benefitted from La Trobe’s sport industry connections.

The duo have recently secured part-time employment in the membership services department at the Melbourne Rebels, of which La Trobe University is the official University partner and subsequently the University of choice for Rugby in Victoria.

The partnership includes high-performance research and exclusive internships across the club including in key departments such as commercial, media and performance, and a commitment to further opportunities for women in sport and the Pasifica community.

Richard completed a Bachelor of Business, Sports Management and Marketing last year. He has worked with La Trobe Sport since August 2019 and interned with another La Trobe industry partner, the Carlton Football Club, in 2020, before securing the part-time Membership Services Consultant role with the Melbourne Rebels.

It is a role he has enjoyed immensely so far and one he hopes will lead to a fulfilling career down the track as he establishes key contacts in the sport industry.

“Coming to the Rebels, there’s only a handful of us each day that work together and help run the club,” Richard said.

“I’ve become nice and tight with a lot of the other colleagues, not just in the membership department but in media and even in the community side of things with Rugby Victoria. It makes coming to work really enjoyable.”

Robert is currently in the final year of his Bachelor of Business and Sports Management course. An international student from Germany, Robert credited La Trobe University’s mentoring programs as a key reason why he was able to take up the position with the Rebels.

“I’m very grateful that I have been able to join the club; I remember last year I was standing next to the office while I was training for the Australian Open and I peered into the office and I was thinking ‘it would be great to work here as an international student’”, Robert said.

“Luckily the (Melbourne Rebels) partnership was covered with the mentoring program.

“Without that partnership, I wouldn’t be here. I encourage anyone to join La Trobe, especially as an international student. I’m standing here now, so I guess things are possible if you put in the effort.”

Along with the Melbourne Rebels, La Trobe is the proud higher education partner of the Carlton Football Club and the Melbourne City FC. We also have community delivery partnerships with the Northern Football Netball League, Softball Australia and Softball Victoria.
