Thanks to generous alumni, Malaysian students like Jennifer can thrive.
Jennifer (picture above) has always been passionate about animal welfare. As a young girl, her goal was to learn how to protect animals, so she could one day teach others to care for them.
When the time came to search for the right university course, Jennifer couldn’t find an animal bioscience degree in Malaysia. So to pursue her passion, she enrolled to study at La Trobe University.
But on arriving in Melbourne, Jennifer began to worry about how she’d meet the rising everyday costs of life at uni.
“My mother is a single parent. She had to use her retirement savings so I could study my dream course at La Trobe. Tertiary education is not cheap, especially when the ringgit’s purchasing power is only a third of the Australian dollar.”
Jennifer is one of thousands of international students who struggle to cope with the financial pressures of university life in Australia.
But thanks to the generosity of the alumni community in Malaysia, Jennifer can focus on her studies with less stress.
“There were times I felt like giving up. But my efforts and determination are paying off. I want to make my mother proud of my accomplishments.”
Jennifer is now one of the top performers in her course. She’s also been selected as part of La Trobe’s Student Excellence Academy, a program which recognises students achieving outstanding results.
We encourage our Malaysian alumni to continue to support current students by donating to the bursary.
