Commercialisation for Researchers
Helping you achieve impact from your research or big ideas by translating it into a new product, service, startup, spinout or more.
Great research has the power to create lasting impact beyond the University.
Whether you're developing a new technology, protecting intellectual property, exploring industry partnerships or bringing an idea to market, our Commercialisation, New Ventures and Investments Team is here to help you translate your research into real-world outcomes.
We provide expert guidance throughout the innovation journey - from identifying opportunities for translation and protecting intellectual property to supporting commercialisation, spin-outs, joint ventures and strategic partnerships.
Our goal is to empower researchers to maximise the social, economic and environmental impact of their research, creating benefits for communities, industry and society.
We are committed to helping you create positive impact and societal benefit from your research and innovations.
WHAT IS RESEARCH COMMERCIALISATION?
Research commercialisation is the process of turning research outcomes, ideas, discoveries, and expertise into products, services, technologies, partnerships, or other real-world applications that create value beyond the university
At La Trobe University, we can provide support to commercialisation opportunities including:
- Licensing intellectual property
- Forming industry collaborations
- Developing start-ups or spin-outs
- Helping external partners adopt research in practice.
Commercialisation provides you with additional pathways to explore how your research can make impact. It is not only about financial return; it is also about increasing the reach, impact, and uptake of research so that it can benefit communities, industry, government, and the broader economy.
WHY COMMERCIALISE YOUR RESEARCH?
Commercialising research is one way to extend the reach and impact of your work beyond the university. For many researchers, it is a chance to turn an insight, discovery or expertise into something that is used in practice - whether that is a product, service, partnership, platform or new venture.
Researchers often pursue commercialisation to:
- Contribute to real-world impact and translation
- Gain personal and professional fulfilment
- Build recognition for their expertise and ideas
- Develop new skills and experience
- Explore career pathways beyond research
- Attract further research funding
- Open up new questions, collaborations and research directions
- Create opportunities for students and others to gain experience and employment.
La Trobe University supports an innovative and entrepreneurial research culture, and we work to help researchers explore opportunities that arise from their ideas.
HOW WE WORK WITH YOU
We support researchers at every career stage to identify commercial potential and take the next step, whether that means building an industry partnership, protecting intellectual property, developing a venture or moving toward market adoption. Our commercialisation and venture teams work across the full breadth of the University and our Schools, Centres and Institutes.
THE COMMERCIALISATION PROCESS
Commercialisation is rarely a straight line. The journey may move through several stages, and some steps may happen at the same time as your idea develops. We work with you throughout the process to help refine the opportunity, assess its potential and connect you with the right support.
