Department of Rural Health Sciences facilities

Our facilities offer students modern, interactive learning experiences and support the groundbreaking work of our researchers.
Our clinical learning environments provide realistic settings where students can master the practice-based skills of their profession in a safe and supportive way.
Our facilities include:
Our clinical learning environments are located at La Trobe’s Albury-Wodonga, Bendigo, Mildura and Shepparton campuses. These spaces replicate those encountered in real clinical settings to provide collaborative, experiential approaches to learning and teaching for our Nursing and Midwifery students. They include acute hospital wards, outpatient clinics and simulated domestic environments.
The Nursing facilities feature hospital electric beds; linen, medication and dressing trolleys; piped gas and suction systems; intravenous infusion, syringe drivers, feeding pumps, epidural and patient-controlled analgesia pumps; portable and in-situ ventilators; and other devices to support breathing such as CPAP and BiPAP machines. Our simulated birthing suite includes a birthing bed, resuscitator, isolette and CTG machine.
We also use a wide range of high and medium-technology manikins and simulators including SimMan 3G high-tech simulator, SimMan essentials high-tech simulator, SimMom, SimNewB and nursing resuscitation manikins, plus a range of part-task trainers for students to practice discrete skills. Our simulation facilities include AV to monitor and record scenarios and control rooms to operate the manikins and interact.
At La Trobe's Bendigo campus, our state-of-the-art immersive simulation room supports students to learn skills in realistic health scenarios, such as an accident scene or hospital room. This room can be transformed into any scenario and is a great interdisciplinary learning space.
La Trobe's telehealth training facilities ensure best practice training for students and for clinicians undertaking professional development. The facility features a telehealth audiovisual setup including microphone, cameras, display screens and computers; technology to stream or record video for larger groups of students or professionals; and mobile telehealth hardware to allow for high quality offsite telehealth consultations.
