Future-focused research

The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology sits at the forefront of the some of the world’s fastest moving industries – that promise to transform how we work and how we live.

Our researchers specialise in data mining, machine learning, deep learning, computer intelligence and bioinformatics. They deliver solutions to a range of industries including digital health, bioinformatics, digital forensics and government.

They are cybersecurity experts, working to prevent, identify and counter threats and vulnerabilities that impact users, systems and networks. And they are big data and Internet of Things experts, and specialists in visualisation, interactive media and education technology.

Our graduate researchers also conduct technology-driven and industry-engaged research. Our Masters and PhD programs give candidates the opportunity to conduct high impact study under the direction of experts in their field.

Research centres

Our staff make key contributions to La Trobe University's research centres.

The Australian Centre for Artificial Intelligence in Medical Innovation is the world’s first university innovation centre specialising in the application of artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery and development of immunotherapies, vaccines and medical innovation.

The Cisco-La Trobe Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things galvanises a decade-long partnership between Cisco and La Trobe University. The Centre is the first of its kind in Australia to exploit the synergy between state-of-the-art artificial intelligence and Internet of Things technologies. It is creating a new home for innovation and collaboration, enabled by access to world-leading programs, to deliver ideas that will drive Australia’s digital future.
