Why study spanish studies?

Study Spanish language, spoken by over 400 million people and an official language on four continents. Or study the related languages of Portuguese (as spoken in Portugal and Brazil), and Catalan (as spoken by seven million Spaniards). Along with language studies, we offer a broad range of subjects in Spanish and Latin American culture, literature and linguistics.

Diploma in Languages

You can study a Diploma in Languages as a stand-alone award (three years part-time) or combine it with a degree at either undergraduate or postgraduate level at any Australian university. Combining the Diploma in Languages with your current degree will usually require you to complete an additional year of study.

External Opportunities

The Spanish Ministry of Education offers positions for language and cultural assistants for Australian Citizens. Language and cultural assistants have the opportunity to improve their knowledge of the Spanish language and culture. International students; consult La Trobe International before undertaking work experience. All students must have approval from Lecturer/Course coordinator.

The Walter Mangold Trust provides a number of scholarships to Australian Undergraduates studying Indonesian, Japanese, Chinese or Spanish Languages to enable students to spend a period of time in a foreign country, with the intention of furthering the education, communication and understanding between peoples and cultures. The grants are restricted to applicants who are residents of Victoria.

Overseas study opportunities

There are many opportunities for La Trobe students to study overseas. Students from overseas can come to La Trobe and do a short term Study Abroad program.
