Why study statistics?

Statistics are used in all facets of our lives. From weather predictions to urban development, from food production to insurance premiums, from health care to competitive sport.

Statisticians collect large quantities of numerical data, which they then analyse for the purpose of understanding, predicting and planning. They act as code breakers, finding trends and stories hidden within masses of information.

If you major in statistics at La Trobe you'll learn how to design experiments, collect data, summarise information, draw conclusions, estimate the present and predict the future.

Where can statistics take me?

A worldwide shortage of qualified statisticians means that statistics graduates are highly sought after in the roles of medical statistician, financial analyst, applied mathematician, meteorologist and sports statistician.

Statistics is used across a wide variety of careers, contributing to understanding through data analysis and forecasting, business modelling, data evaluation and risk assessment.

Statisticians work widely in areas such as scientific research, business management, insurance, management, manufacturing, economic analysis, marketing, health management and psychology.
