Our story
The Mental Health and Disability Law Research Centre at La Trobe University aims to advance law, policy, and practice concerning mental health and disability. Working at local, national, and global levels, the Centre brings together researchers, affected communities, broader civil society, and government.
We produce collaborative, interdisciplinary research that informs law reform, builds community resources, strengthens government services, and supports fairer and more inclusive systems. Our research is grounded in partnerships that lead to real-world impact in Australia and internationally.

Our publications and people
The Mental Health and Disability Law Research Centre is based on the idea that when law and policy reflect a fuller view of the human experience – of which disability is a natural part – it’s not just people with disabilities who benefit, but everyone.
Protecting the rights of people with disability requires understanding how ableism operates in law, policy and practice. Rigorous legal research by specialist disability research centres is critical to building this evidence base and invaluable to my work as Disability Discrimination Commissioner.
