The funding will enable La Trobe to deliver a suite of programs across South East Asia and China, including immersive study tours for students from the region, new partnerships linking Chinese university students with Victorian startups and the launch of a new training program in Thailand to support Business and IT course delivery.
La Trobe Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice President (Future Growth), Dr Stacey Farraway, said the funding demonstrated the Victorian Government’s commitment to strengthening international education.
“This Yes to International Students funding sends a strong message to students around the world: Victoria welcomes you and La Trobe is here to help you achieve your goals through an outstanding Australian education,” Dr Farraway said.
The fully funded $280,000 package will support programs that aim to drive student enrolments, strengthen offshore academic capacity and foster long-term global partnerships for a more sustainable and connected international education sector.
Dr Farraway said the funding would help build on La Trobe’s longstanding international partnerships, particularly in South East Asia and China.
“We’re proud of our deep and longstanding partnerships across China and South East Asia and our contribution to developing global talent through joint education, research and industry collaboration that delivers lasting impact for both regions," Dr Farraway said.
Victorian Minister for Economic Growth and Jobs Danny Pearson announced the share of funding to 16 Victorian education providers, including La Trobe, under the YISF on 8 July.
“We are backing international students because they drive jobs and the economy and boost Victoria’s global reputation,” the Minister said.
“This fund will ensure students can benefit from the world class education Victoria has to offer while supporting innovation and deepening cultural ties.”
The YISF was announced by the Premier in September 2024 as a part of the Victorian delegation to India, which was attended by La Trobe University’s Chancellor the Hon. John Brumby AO and Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell.
