La Trobe in world’s top 350 universities

La Trobe University has risen through the ranks in one of the most prestigious university rankings – the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

The University ranked 301st overall in the 2021 ARWU results released by ShanghaiRanking today.

This is an improvement of 23 ranks from 324th in 2020.

The ARWU is released annually and this year ranked the academic and research performance of more than 2000 universities from around the world.

La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO said this year’s ranking was a testament to the University’s exceptional academic performance, high-impact research, and resilience in what has been an extraordinary time for higher education institutions.

“The ARWU ranking places a high emphasis on research outputs, and it’s pleasing that La Trobe is being recognised for our excellence in this area,” Professor Dewar said.

“I am incredibly proud of our academic talent, and the meaningful contribution their work makes on a global scale.”

The ARWU ranks universities using several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.

In addition to ARWU, La Trobe continues to be rated in the top 400 in the QS World University Rankings and top 250 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, making it among the top 1.2 per cent of universities in the world.
