La Trobe in world's top 250 universities

For the second year running, La Trobe University has been named in the world’s top 250 universities, achieving a ranking of 218 in the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) World Ranking and placing third in Victoria and 13 in Australia.

This is La Trobe’s highest position to date in the respected ranking and is a rise of 16 ranks from last year’s 234 position and a rise of two places nationally.

La Trobe has continued to move up the THE world rankings over the past four years, rising 11.9 points since 2017.*

La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO said he was incredibly proud of the latest ranking which reinforced the University’s position as a world-leader for education and research.

“To achieve such a strong outcome in such challenging times is testament to our staff who are conducting world-leading research and exceptional teaching,” Professor Dewar said.

“La Trobe researchers work in close partnership with community groups, industry and government to address issues of local, national and international importance, bringing positive impacts to our communities. Our teaching programs are carefully designed to ensure our graduates have the skills and knowledge required to succeed in the modern workplace.”

THE calculates the rankings based on information provided by more than 1600 research-intensive universities and institutions across the globe. Universities are assessed for research, citations, teaching, international outlook, and industry income.

La Trobe’s 2022 results showed strong improvement in citations, up 3.6 points relative to other institutions, while International Outlook rose 3.1 points.

In April, the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings placed La Trobe fourth in the world for overall contribution to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.  La Trobe ranked second in the world and first in Australia for gender equality and first globally for protecting and restoring life on land.

La Trobe is placed in the top 400 universities in the world in all three major global rankings – QS, Times Higher Education and Academic Ranking of World Universities.

*In 2018 La Trobe was in the 351-400 band, in 2019 was 301-350, in 2020 was 251-300, in 2021 and 2022 was in the top 250.
