La Trobe shines in Education

La Trobe University School of Education has jumped in international rankings to 104, highlighting its vital role as a world-leader in teacher education.

The latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject elevated La Trobe by 160 places, up from 264 in 2019. La Trobe Education is now ranked 10th in Australia and 4th in Victoria.

Professor Simon Evans, Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Arts, Social Sciences and Commerce said the impressive ranking lift reflected the quality of research and teaching in the School of Education.

“We play a key role in educating the next generation of teachers and continuing to improve teaching practices among the existing workforce.  Our improvement in international rankings is testament to our focus on providing quality teacher education for the modern classroom,” Professor Evans said.

“La Trobe plays a pivotal role in helping to boost teacher numbers and capabilities, particularly in rural and regional Australia through our regional campuses and involvement in programs such as Nexus,” Professor Evans said.

Acting Head of Education, Associate Professor Joanna Barbousas said La Trobe’s teacher education curriculum is frequently renewed and revised to ensure all students from diverse backgrounds bring their personal and cultural experiences into their teaching practice.

“We are focused on providing pathways into teaching and preparing teachers to create innovative learning opportunities in their classrooms. This ranking is a welcome endorsement and recognition for our staff and students,” Associate Professor Barbousas said.

The latest Times Higher Education World Rankings by Subject placed La Trobe’s Social Sciences at 304, and Business and Economics at 281.

In September, La Trobe achieved its highest position this decade in the 2019 Times Higher Education World Rankings, placing 291st in the world.  In October Arts and Humanities ranked 183 in the world.

The University is ranked in the top 400 universities worldwide by all of the major independent rankings agencies – 307th in the ARWU global rankings, 291st in the Times Higher Education Rankings and joint 400th in the QS World University Rankings.
