Arts and Humanities at La Trobe has ranked 183 in the world (up 11 places from 194 in 2018) and has maintained its third place in Victoria in the latest Times Higher Education World Rankings by subject.
Professor Simon Evans, Pro Vice-Chancellor, College of Arts, Social Sciences and Commerce, said now more than ever Humanities and Arts play an integral role in society.
“In an age of digital disruption, Arts and Humanities should be nimble, adaptive and reflective of societal need – and our research and teaching at La Trobe do just that,” Professor Evans said.
“This fantastic ranking is testament to outstanding established and emerging scholars and a refreshed teaching program in the field of Arts and Humanities.
“We play a vital role in informing and shaping public debate through our research and our innovative degrees are helping develop the next generation of leaders and thinkers.”
Head of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Professor Nick Bisley, said La Trobe’s pioneering approach to teaching Arts and Humanities is responsive to future workforce need.
“The way we approach teaching Arts and Humanities is rapidly evolving to ensure our students are equipped with the knowledge and skills to adapt and succeed in the future workforce,” Professor Bisley said.
“For example, our new and unique Bachelor of Humanities, Innovation and Technology is designed to apply a humanities lens to discussions around disruptive technologies such as AI and big data, ensuring a deeper understanding of the social and ethical consequences of these advancements.
“And our reinvigorated Bachelor of Arts degree provides unprecedented flexibility for our students to follow their passions by offering a huge range of options across the spectrum of arts disciplines, with the opportunity to study some technological and commercial subjects too.”
