“We at La Trobe have, like the rest of the community, been shocked and saddened by what has happened.
“I can confirm the accused had been offered a place to study with us, but had not yet commenced their course, as classes won’t start for several weeks.
“We are working with the authorities and will assist their investigation in any way we can.
“Questions on immigration and security clearance processes are best answered by Federal authorities. Our selection processes are based on academic suitability.
“As the matter is the subject of an active police investigation and is before the court, we have no further comment to make at this time.”
