La Trobe retains position in world ranking

La Trobe has retained its position in the 300-400 band of the 2018 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) released by Shanghai Rankings today.

In this ranking, La Trobe is one of the fastest rising universities in the world since 2015.

The University placed 317th in the world, 16th in Australia and 4th in Victoria.

This latest ranking cements the University’s position in the top 400 of all three major world university rankings: ARWU, QS and Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Keith Nugent said La Trobe’s improved position across all global rankings over the past few years demonstrates consistency of world-class research standards.

“Our strong performance in international rankings reflects our exceptional research capabilities, the hard work and dedication of our academic staff and our close collaboration with industry and research partners,” Professor Nugent said.

“In particular, our growth this year in publications was a key contributor to this very pleasing outcome in today’s ARWU rankings.”

The ARWU ranks universities with several indicators of academic or research performance, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, highly cited researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution.
