Karen Quinlan appointed to NPGA

La Trobe Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar has welcomed the appointment of Director and Professor of Practice at La Trobe University’s Art Institute, Ms Karen Quinlan, as the new Director of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia.

“I am delighted that Karen Quinlan’s extraordinary leadership in the arts has been recognised with this appointment to lead one of Australia’s most important cultural institutions.

“Karen has played a unique role in regional arts. Since January 2016 she has combined her roles as the Director of both the La Trobe Art Institute and the Bendigo Art Gallery to deliver a program of exhibitions, collection management and public programs that underlines the deep partnerships La Trobe University has developed with our regional communities.

“The enduring partnerships Karen Quinlan has forged with leading cultural institutions nationally and internationally will continue to benefit La Trobe students and communities in years to come.

“We are very proud that a La Trobe person will now lead the National Portrait Gallery of Australia. We wish her the very best and look forward to continuing work with Karen in her new role.”
