Cann Group, a leading developer and supplier of medicinal cannabis in Australia, will enhance its research and development operations with La Trobe, which conducts pioneering research in agricultural and biomedical sciences.
La Trobe Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Keith Nugent, welcomed the expanded collaboration between the two organisations, noting their shared goals and research objectives.
“It’s fantastic to welcome another industry leader to our expanding research and innovation precinct on our Melbourne campus,” Professor Nugent said.
“This strengthened collaboration has the potential to provide significant economic benefits, reflecting La Trobe’s key focus on research and innovation, our ambition to help solve some of the big challenges facing our communities and to help grow the economy in Melbourne’s north.
“Importantly, the partnership has the potential to develop a body of evidence that could lead to treatments for a range of medical conditions including the management of chronic pain.”
Cann Group CEO Peter Crock said he believes the deeper relationship with La Trobe will strengthen Cann’s own capabilities in plant genetics, breeding, cultivation, extraction and analysis, while building a pipeline for clinical trials.
“We see this as a key development in advancing the medicinal cannabis industry in Australia, and most importantly, getting the right products to patients in need.”
Cann’s corporate headquarters at La Trobe continues to expand as the company grows. It will continue to operate separate cultivation and production facilities in undisclosed locations in Victoria.
Professor Nugent said benefits of this strengthened partnership could include creation of new industries and high-tech jobs in Melbourne’s north, opportunities for La Trobe students to engage with industry, creation of PhD scholarships and industry placements and opportunities for clinical trials in agricultural and medicinal technology fields.
