A proud Kaurna/Narungga man, Professor Mitchell brings more than 25 years of experience in educational leadership, school improvement and culturally responsive practice.
Throughout his career, Professor Mitchell has held senior leadership roles including Principal of Ranfurly Primary School and Acting Principal of Merbein P–10 College. His leadership work sits at the intersection of school improvement, culturally responsive leadership and leadership development, with a strong focus on instructional improvement, wellbeing, community engagement and cultural identity.
As Professor of Practice, Professor Mitchell will help strengthen connections between professional practice, educational leadership and community engagement across the School, drawing on his extensive experience working with schools and communities across regional Australia.
As Director of Professional Experience, he will work closely with Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Professional Experience and Partnerships, Dr Haili Hughes, to lead the strategic coordination of professional experience across the School's programs, campuses and partner settings. Working closely with schools, early childhood services and education partners, he will support high-quality placement experiences that help pre-service teachers connect theory with practice and develop the skills needed for successful careers in education.
Based at La Trobe's Mildura campus, Professor Mitchell's appointments further strengthen the School's commitment to educational leadership, culturally responsive practice and meaningful engagement with communities.
Professor Joanna Barbousas, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Education, Impact and Innovation, and Dean of the School of Education, welcomed the appointments.
