Vale Dr John Cooke

La Trobe University acknowledges the passing of Dr John Cooke, whose longstanding contribution to the Mildura campus helped shape its connection to community, industry, and the region.

Dr Cooke brought a unique combination of scientific expertise, public sector leadership, and deep regional commitment to his role as a member, and later Chair, of the Mildura Regional Advisory Board. Since joining the Board at its inception in 1995, he played an important role in guiding the University’s direction in Mildura, with a strong focus on ensuring it remained responsive to the needs of the Sunraysia community. He retired in March 2022, after 27 years of committed service to the Mildura campus.

A consistent and thoughtful advocate for regional education, Dr Cooke championed access to local study opportunities and played a significant role in securing philanthropic support for Mildura university and TAFE students, as well as for local research initiatives, expanding opportunities for students and strengthening regional capability. His influence helped strengthen the University’s role not just as an education provider, but as a trusted regional partner.

Dr Cooke’s connection with La Trobe was both professional and personal. After completing his PhD at the University in 1985, he maintained a strong and enduring relationship with the institution across his career, underpinned by a belief in the power of education to support regional resilience and growth.

Widely respected for his expertise in natural resource management, water and salinity, Dr Cooke brought significant insight to the Board and to the broader University community. His ability to connect science, policy and community need made him a valued advisor and a trusted voice in regional development. In recognition of his exceptional contribution, Dr Cooke was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa) by La Trobe University in 2015, the first Mildura community member to receive the University’s most prestigious honour.

As previous Pro Vice-Chancellor (Regional), Professor Richard Speed reflected on John’s retirement from Mildura's Regional Advisory Board, John was a steady source of guidance and support to generations of university leaders, helping them navigate the Mildura community with insight, judgement, and care. Richard recalled that John’s advice was often the wisest place to begin, and that his advocacy for the campus was both patient and persuasive, whether explaining its value to government, community, and University stakeholders, or reinforcing the importance of local access to higher education for students and families across the region. He also spoke of John’s careful governance and calm counsel during challenging moments, qualities that helped strengthen trust and sustain the University’s relationships in the community.
