Vale Brian Grogan OAM

La Trobe University was saddened by the death of Brian Grogan OAM on Friday 6 March, at the age of 90.

Brian was a remarkable man whose vision, commitment, and quiet determination transformed educational opportunity in Mildura and across the region. He shaped La Trobe’s presence in Mildura and transformed opportunities for generations of regional students.

Brian’s belief that access to higher education should not depend on where someone lives has left an enduring mark on La Trobe and on the lives of countless students. Brian played a foundational role in the establishment of La Trobe University in Mildura. As the founding Chair of our Mildura Regional Advisory Board, he provided leadership at a critical time in the University’s history and was instrumental in advocating for a permanent campus. Through his efforts and persistence, that vision became a reality with the opening of the Brian Grogan Building in 2003, and with it a momentum that continues to shape the campus today.

Brian’s values closely aligned with those of the University. He believed deeply in fairness, opportunity, and the importance of strong regional communities. His leadership helped in addressing the gap between regional and metropolitan participation in higher education by providing increased opportunities for regional students to pursue a university education close to home.

Beyond his contribution to education, Brian served the community with distinction in many capacities, including as a leader in the water industry, a local Councillor, President of SuniTAFE, and National President of the Murray–Darling Association Inc. In all his roles, he was guided by a strong sense of public service and a genuine commitment to the common good.

Those who knew Brian remember him as a man of great humility, generous spirit, and integrity who never sought recognition for himself despite the scale of his achievements. His legacy stands as a powerful reminder of what one person’s dedication and belief in community can accomplish.
