School Early Career Alumni Award for Orthoptics

Congratulations to Dr Gareth Lingham on receiving the School Early Career Alumni Award for Orthoptics.

Dr Lingham is an internationally recognised vision researcher and orthoptist whose research is helping shape the future of myopia prevention, eye health policy and blindness prevention worldwide.

A graduate of our Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Orthoptics program, he has established an extraordinary global reputation within only a few years of completing his doctorate.

“I am incredibly grateful to La Trobe University SAHHSS, not only for this award, but also for providing the foundation for my current career that has taken me around the world and provided opportunities to impact people’s vision and lives,” said Dr Lingham.

Currently a Research Fellow at the Lions Eye Institute and Deputy Director of the Melbourne World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness, Dr Lingham’s work focuses on one of the world’s fastest growing public health concerns, childhood myopia and vision impairment.

His research spans epidemiology, clinical trials, public health and evidence-based policy, producing outcomes that directly influence clinical practice internationally.

Dr Lingham’s career illustrates the power of research, innovation and public service to improve health outcomes at a global scale.

As an orthoptist, scientist and educator, he has already achieved distinction well beyond what might be expected at this stage of his career and is an outstanding representative of La Trobe University on the international stage.
