As Director of La Trobe’s Centre for Global Security, Professor Bec Strating leads a team of researchers who are rethinking security for a changing world.
“We examine how interconnected challenges, such as geopolitical tension, climate disruption, economic instability, information warfare, public health pressures and technological change, shape global security,” she explains.
Professor Strating’s own research, which focuses on the Asian region, has contributed new ways of conceptualising maritime security.
“I focus on how Australia and regional countries can respond to maritime disputes, coercion, strategic rivalry, information disorder and the erosion of the rules and institutions that underpin regional stability.”
Professor Strating also helped develop the concept of Blue Security, which broadens thinking about maritime security beyond naval competition alone.
“I contribute to debates on the maritime rules-based order, Australian foreign and defence policy, and the role of regional institutions and diplomacy in managing strategic competition,” she adds.
Her next project will expand research on the past, present and future of maritime order in the region, and Australia’s role in shaping it.
“I am also increasingly focused on emerging challenges, including information security, strategic narratives, and lawfare in maritime debates.”
