Professor Lorne Neudorf, Dean of La Trobe Law School, has been appointed to the National Judicial College of Australia's new AI Advisory Committee for a five-year term.
Chaired by Chief Justice Laura Stein of the Supreme Court of South Australia, the Committee will help shape how Australia's judiciary responds to artificial intelligence, with a focus on judicial education.
“AI presents opportunities and challenges for the courts, and judges will increasingly encounter these technologies in the cases before them and in the broader administration of justice,” says Professor Neudorf.
“Judicial education will be critical to ensuring that judges understand how AI works, where its limitations lie and the issues it raises for the judicial role. It is a privilege to contribute to the work of the Committee and to support the National Judicial College of Australia as it responds to the rapid evolution of AI.”
The Committee will consider the knowledge and skills judges will need as AI continues to evolve and how judicial education can support the responsible use and understanding of AI while maintaining public confidence in Australia's courts.
