Paul graduates with a lifelong calling to care

For Paul Segura, completing his Bachelor of Nursing is more than an academic milestone - it’s the fulfilment of a long-held calling.

“It feels incredibly rewarding,” he says, reflecting on the end of years filled with assessments, deadlines, and late nights. Paul describes a strong sense of relief and gratitude, knowing the sacrifices were worth it. Yet, for him, graduation is not an end point.

“Learning in nursing never truly stops,” he says. “In many ways, this is just the beginning.”

Originally from the Philippines, Paul began his career as a Registered Nurse in the operating theatre, spending nearly five years developing discipline, technical skill, and a passion for perioperative care. He later took his expertise to the State of Qatar, working there for seven years and gaining valuable international experience. Healthcare is a family affair - his wife is also a Registered Nurse and qualified midwife, who also studied at La Trobe Mildura.  Together they are raising three children in Mildura. Outside of work, the Segura family enjoys the outdoors and creativity, from camping and bike rides to music and visual arts.

Paul’s motivation to become a nurse was deeply personal. A desire to care for his parents and family sparked a lifelong passion for helping others.

“Nursing is more than a profession,” he says. “It’s about compassion, service, and community.”

After returning to study with La Trobe, Paul found the experience transformative. Supportive educators and a high-tech skills lab helped rebuild his confidence. That journey has come full circle with his role as an Operating Theatre nurse at Mildura Health Private Hospital.

Looking ahead, Paul hopes to pursue postgraduate study and continue growing in perioperative care. His message is simple and heartfelt: never give up on your dreams.
