Law student driven to make an impact

Bachelor of Laws (Honours)/Bachelor of Commerce student, Gianluca Polimeni, is driven to make a meaningful impact.

“I have always wanted to leave my mark, to contribute to something bigger,” Gianluca says. “And, since high school, I have felt that law is where I can truly do this.”

Of the many highlights of his time at La Trobe, he says extracurricular activities have been particularly formative.

“La Trobe fosters a healthy environment that is ripe with opportunities and experiences for all students.”

“I have participated in internal and external mooting competitions, which have been both challenging and rewarding. I am also proud to have spent majority of my degree as part of the La Trobe Law Students' Association, where I facilitated and attended countless professional and social events.”

“The knowledge I have gained and the relationships I have built have been thanks to these experiences. I would hope they are a part of who I am and the lawyer that I hope to be one day,” he adds.

With a focus on getting real-world experience, Gianluca undertook legal placement in the La Trobe Law School Clinic in partnership with Whittlesea Community Connections. He says it gave him a great sense of fulfilment.

“The purpose of the clinic is to assist clients in lower socio-economic areas with the process of applying for divorce, seeing it all the way through from start to end.”

“We were given many responsibilities to facilitate the client intake, communication and applications. This fine-tuned my communication and problem-solving skills and my attention to detail. It also gave me real-life experience in a client-driven legal environment.”

As for what’s next, Gianluca says he wants to gain as much experience as he can, having completed another placement in 2025 at JobWatch, an employment rights community legal centre. He is currently undertaking a final placement with La Trobe University Legal Services.

“Like many Law students, I am often asked by various family and friends about what type of law I want to practice. But I do not think this question is easily answered. I am interested in many different areas of law, I retain an open mind.”

“After graduating, I hope to find myself within the realm of commercial practice, which I continue to learn more about every day. I also remain intrigued about family law practice and what that entails. I remain forever curious!”
