Held at La Trobe University's Albury-Wodonga Campus, the event featured Australia's Age Discrimination Commissioner, Robert Fitzgerald AM, one of the nation's leading advocates for human rights, social justice and equality.
In conversation with attendees, Commissioner Fitzgerald explored the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly ageing population, including the impacts of ageism and discrimination on individuals, communities and health systems. Particular focus was given to the unique experiences of older people living in rural and regional Australia.
Hosted as part of the La Trobe Rural Health School Conference 2026, the annual JRC Oration continues to provide a platform for important conversations that shape the future of ageing, health and wellbeing in rural and regional communities.
Associate Professor Rachel Winterton, Director of the John Richards Centre for Rural Ageing Research, thanked Commissioner Fitzgerald and all attendees for contributing to a thought-provoking discussion about how Australia can better support healthy ageing.
"With growing numbers of older people in our rural communities, it is critical that conversations about ageing, inclusion and health equity are informed by the experiences of rural older people," said Rachel Winterton.
"The JRC Oration provides a valuable forum for sharing ideas, challenging assumptions and exploring solutions that support people to age well, regardless of where they live."
