“I believe that our legal system plays a crucial role in the functioning of society, so it is important that it is fair and accessible for everyone, particularly marginalised groups who may be disadvantaged,” she says.
“I also want a career where I can work directly with people and help them. I’ve always enjoyed analysing complex issues and viewing arguments from different perspectives.”
Esther chose to combine law with psychology because of her interest in human behaviour and the brain.
“I think there are a lot of valuable skills you can learn in psychology which can be applied in lots of other areas and life more generally.”
Esther, who studies at La Trobe’s Bendigo campus, says a highlight of her course has been the welcoming community.
“Since the campus is smaller, it feels like much more of a community. The classes are also smaller, so it is much easier to have discussions and interactive activities where everyone is able to participate.”
Esther’s academic achievements were recently recognised with the LLB Regional Excellence Prize, awarded to a newly commencing law student at the Bendigo Campus.
While she is still exploring which area of law she would like to pursue after graduation, Esther hopes to find a career where she can make a difference in people’s lives.
“Ideally, I would like a job in which I can apply the knowledge and skills gained from both my law degree and my psychology degree, however I am leaning more heavily towards a career in law.”
