A global education

Bachelor of Global Studies student Amber Sivyer shares how studying overseas and completing a Victorian Parliament internship shaped her passion for international policy and social change.

Amber Sivyer chose La Trobe University’s Bachelor of Global Studies “to see and understand the world better.”

During her degree, Amber has made the most of opportunities to build real-world experience, including a semester exchange to Madrid and participation in the Victorian Parliament Internship Program.

“I have a minor in Spanish, so I chose Madrid to deepen my knowledge of the language and culture,” she says. “Living and studying overseas strengthened my cross-cultural communication skills and gave me greater confidence working in international contexts.”

She also recently completed a parliamentary internship, working with a Member of Parliament to produce a report on Melbourne's urban waterways.

“The internship gave me practical experience in policy research and stakeholder analysis,” she says. “I learned how evidence, community perspectives and political realities intersect in decision-making.”

Amber’s report, which placed special importance on Indigenous knowledge in marine policy, was awarded best report from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.

She says gaining insight into the inner workings of government confirmed her interest in a policy-focused career.

“I love how politics helps us understand the interconnected and multilayered nature of complex issues,” she says. “The opportunity to contribute to meaningful change for Australians and the global community really appeals to me.”
