Empowering women in cybersecurity

La Trobe’s Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) student group recently came together as part of Cyber Security Awareness Month.

The first of its kind at an Australian university, the student chapter of WiCyS has become a driving force in uplifting women and non-binary students, building confidence and opening career pathways.

The opening address was delivered by Assistant Director Hayley Tuck, representing Lieutenant General Michelle McGuinness, Australia’s National Cyber Security Coordinator.

Hayley spoke about the importance of a diverse cybersecurity workforce.

“A strong, diverse workforce drives innovation, strengthens national security and supports a digital economy we can trust.”

Professor Wenny Rahayu, Dean of La Trobe’s School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences, said the initiative reflects the University’s values of collaboration, innovation and inclusion.

“This event is designed by our students, led by our students, and strongly supported by our School,” Professor Rahayu said.

“It reflects the values we want all our students to carry into their future careers. This group is also giving back, providing digital and cyber safety support to vulnerable communities through hands-on workshops in phishing awareness and digital resilience.”Associate Professor Leanne Ngo said the WiCyS is more than a student group.

“It is a community of students, academics and professional staff who uplift one another in their journey through cybersecurity. Our mission is to create a culture of belonging, where every voice is valued and every pathway is supported.”

She added that cybersecurity is about people as much as it is about technology.

“My advice to women, non-binary students and supportive allies is this: Step into the field with confidence, knowing that your voice is valued, your perspective is needed and your community will stand beside you.”

“Cybersecurity does not discriminate - threats impact everyone, and the workforce must reflect the diversity of the society it protects.”
