The tree removal will take place throughout Nangak Tamboree, which runs through La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus.
Exotic species such as willows were originally planted along waterways for erosion control and aesthetic reasons. However, the spread of these species has degraded riverbank environments in south eastern Australia.
Willow trees are classed as invasive species because they reproduce rapidly through seeds or from broken twigs and branches, reduce habitat and food supply for native animals, and consume significant amounts of water.
The removal of these trees will allow revegetation using indigenous species to occur in the next few years to help restore the waterway.
Removal works will take place over the coming months.
