La Trobe University is excited to host the 69th Annual Meeting of the Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS) from 9 -12 December 2025, the largest mathematics research conference in Australia. The event will bring together mathematicians from across the country and overseas.
“It’s the biggest event on the calendar for the collective mathematical community in Australia,” says Professor Marcel Jackson, Associate Dean of Research and Industry Engagement in the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.
“Australian mathematicians tend to work with a strong focus on international collaboration. This conference provides a really valuable way for us to come together as a community and better understand what each of us is doing.”
Artificial intelligence will be a key topic of discussion at this year’s conference, with Professor Jackson moderating a debate on the role of AI in mathematics.
He will also present research relating to a new algebraic framework that offers an alternative to traditional machine learning methods.
“AI has become such a dominant topic in academia and industry, but most of what we call AI today is built on neural networks,” he explains. “This approach takes a completely different path, one that’s grounded in algebra and logic.”
The conference will feature plenary lectures by leading mathematicians, special sessions across a wide range of disciplines, and opportunities for collaboration and professional networking.
Professor Jackson says one of the highlights is the breadth of the program.
“It’s always enriching to see talks across all areas of mathematics, from applied to pure and everything in between. You get a sense of the diversity and depth of the field.”
