Peter Cook Prize in Australian History

Master of Arts (History) student Shannon Hale has been awarded the Peter Cook Prize in Australian History for her research into rape-related victim blaming in mid-to-late nineteenth century Victoria.

Shannon says she chose to postgraduate study to deepen her understanding of an issue she’s passionate about, and to make a meaningful contribution beyond academia.

“I chose La Trobe’s Honours to Masters pathway because it presented me with an opportunity to build further upon a topic that I already felt very strongly about. I also appreciate the flexibility that the degree affords in terms of moving at my own pace and researching in a way that aligns with me,” she says.

For Shannon, the people she’s met has been one of the most rewarding aspects of her time at La Trobe.

“It is amazing to be surrounded by such esteemed academics and peers who are all incredibly supportive and generous with their time. This environment has helped me to grow a stronger sense of confidence in myself and my own research,” she says.

Shannon says receiving the Peter Cook Prize in Australian History was another highlight.

“Receiving this award on top of achieving first-class Honours last year has been extremely rewarding and motivating.”

“My research looks at the way in which women victims of assault have historically been blamed for crimes perpetrated against them. It explores the factors that influenced victim blaming, why it occurred, and what its ultimate purpose was.”

“I believe this research is extremely important due to its relevance in modern day Victoria and Australia. Rape culture has a historical lineage with very real consequences and by exploring concepts such as victim blaming in the past, we can understand the intricacies of such ideas and work towards dismantling their power in current social structures.”

While Shannon is not 100% sure what she wants to do after graduation, she knows it will involve history.

“Whether as a researcher, a historian or in the galleries, libraries, archives and museums sector. I honestly think anything in the field of history would be a dream; however, I am open to any possibilities.”
