Renowned Australian food icon Maggie Beer AO delivered an inspiring address to around 100 guests, including philanthropists, government and industry leaders.
The event reinforced the JRC’s commitment to research and advocacy in rural ageing, with a special focus on food, nutrition, and quality of life for older people - core themes championed by both the Centre and the Maggie Beer Foundation.
Key themes from Maggie Beer’s speech included:
- The Foundation’s mission to improve food experiences and quality of life for older Australians, especially in aged care.
- The importance of linking the latest research on nutrition and brain health with practical, enjoyable food experiences.
- Advocacy for training and supporting aged care cooks and chefs to deliver nourishing, emotionally uplifting meals.
“The JRC Oration is a testament to our commitment to advancing rural health through research, collaboration, and community engagement. We are honoured to welcome Maggie Beer, whose passion for food and wellbeing aligns so closely with our mission to improve the lives of older Australians,” said Professor Jane Mills, Dean, LaTrobe Rural Health School.
“Events like the JRC Oration bring together thought leaders, practitioners, and advocates who share a vision for healthier, more connected rural communities. Maggie Beer’s insights remind us of the profound impact that good food and care can have on quality of life at every age,” said Assoc. Prof Sean MacDermott, Director, JRC.
