Last week, we celebrated the achievements of 15 graduates of the Certificate IV in Aboriginal Cultural Heritage, a proud moment for each student and a significant step for the cultural heritage sector.

The ceremony brought together family, friends and community leaders, including a Welcome to Country from Wurundjeri Elder, Uncle Perry Wandin, and speeches from Christine Couzens MP, Parliamentary Secretary for First Peoples, and Aunty Annette Xiberras from the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council.

Professor Matt McGuire, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences said “It is a real privilege to be associated with these students and the vital work around preserving Indigenous knowledge and culture that the Cert IV enables.”

“As with so many things, the University is following in the footsteps of Australia’s first people in supporting the passing on of tradition and deepening our understanding of Indigenous culture. Special shout out to the staff who lead this program – Tya Lovett and Leah Hunt. Great work team. We are very proud of you.”

The first and only nationally accredited training course of its kind, the Certificate IV in Aboriginal Cultural Heritage provides those involved in the management of Aboriginal cultural heritage with the skill required to work effectively in the cultural heritage industry.

The course is the result of many years of collaboration between heritage and education professionals, Aboriginal organisations, Traditional Owners, and government agencies.
