La Trobe hosts 69th AustMS annual meeting

Last week, La Trobe University’s School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences hosted the 69th Annual Meeting on behalf of the Australian Mathematical Society (AustMS).

The event brought together over 500 mathematicians from across the country and overseas, making it the most representative mathematics event in Australia.

The conference featured lectures by leading mathematicians, special sessions across a wide range of mathematical disciplines, and opportunities for collaboration and professional networking.

“This was the biggest event on the calendar for the collective mathematical community in Australia in 2025,” says Professor Marcel Jackson, Associate Dean of Research and Industry Engagement in the School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.

Artificial intelligence was a key topic of discussion at this year’s conference, with a well-attended debate on the role of AI in mathematics.

"The breadth and quality of the talks was superb. Alongside the many invited and contributed presentations, 140 students also presented their work. A particular highlight for me this year was the introduction of a mathematics art exhibition, ranging from sculptures, to moving image, to line drawings”

The event also included a prize ceremony celebrating excellence across the discipline. Among the notable prize winners was La Trobe’s Dr Ravindi Nanayakkara, who was awarded the 2025 Australian Mathematical Society Annual Award for Teaching Excellence (Early Career). The award recognised Dr Nanayakkara’s outstanding contribution to teaching and student learning in the mathematical sciences at the tertiary level.
