IT alumnus supports epilepsy care

Bachelor of Information Technology alum, Harley Saunders, is using his technical skills to make a real-world impact by helping people living with epilepsy.

“My studies gave me the confidence and desire to combine my existing technical skills with the real world and put that passion to good use in a sector that is brimming with opportunity and growth potential for IT.”

Harley, who is now working as a Systems Analyst in the not-for-profit sector, says working and studying alongside other tech-savvy professionals was a key factor in his transition to industry.

“The thing I enjoy most is being at the forefront of changes and improvements within our sector and all the new opportunities it brings,” he says.

Reflecting on his time at university, Harley acknowledges the challenges of studying during the 2021 lockdowns, while also highlighting the rewarding aspects of his experience.

“The industry project we undertook as part of the degree was a massive yet enjoyable challenge, and the pay off at the end of the year was the satisfaction of knowing we did exceptionally well given the circumstances.”

“I also enjoyed the atmosphere at La Trobe's Bundoora campus and the people I met there over the course of my degree.”

Harley is currently working for The Epilepsy Foundation, an organisation that assists people living with epilepsy and other neurological conditions.

“I work with our Office 365 and Dynamics applications, which manage everything from client services to marketing and fundraising operations. Being at the forefront of developing and rolling out these applications allows me to tailor Microsoft services to the non-profit sector, addressing gaps and improving efficiency.”

“Being a person that people depend on and playing a major role in a consistently expanding team is also a great responsibility and privilege.”
